About Us

For nearly 30 years we have been helping the UK and China do business together. We focus on answering the question "is there a market in China for my product or service?".

China-UK experience

For nearly 30 years we have been helping the UK and China do business together. We focus on answering the question ‘is there a market in China for my product or service?’ and then we concentrate on introducing you to interested Chinese buyers. We use our China knowledge and network of contacts among Chinese businesses and government departments to help our clients meet decision-makers that are interested in buying their product in particular. If necessary we can help you navigate opaque regulations and provide communication support to help you conclude deals.

Essex International also manages the long standing East of England-Jiangsu partnership on behalf of Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk County Councils, helping businesses, schools, universities, vocational colleges, museums, cities and regions develop profitable partnerships. This has increased exports to China and attracted new inward investment to the East of England.

We also organise government-to-government study and training programmes to help UK and Chinese professionals exchange best practice. Every year we bring hundreds of Chinese business visitors to Essex and the East of England and our work boosts the East of England economy by £3.48 million in Gross Value Added, the equivalent of 34 full-time jobs, annually.

We help:

  • Businesses looking for Chinese exports or investment
  • Local authorities/Cities/Government departments wanting to link with China
  • Schools and HE/FE institutions wanting to form strategic partnerships in China
  • Specialist training organisations wanting to help develop Chinese professionals

In 1986 the Chelmsford Institute (since grown into Anglia Ruskin University) received a delegation of engineers on a study visit and the relationship between Essex County Council and Jiangsu Province was born.

Jiangsu is China’s economic powerhouse. Its 79 million people create more than 10% of all China’s GDP, making Jiangsu’s economy the same size as Saudi Arabia’s and equivalent to around 50% of all India’s GDP.  Several of its cities are in the top 10 cities in China by GDP and it leads China in terms of education and value of foreign investment.  Jiangsu has some of China’s leading industrial zones and is leading China’s efforts to diversify into hi-tech and service industries.  In short, Jiangsu is a good place to start looking for business opportunities in China.

Essex International has been managing Essex’s links with Jiangsu since 1988 and has its Representative Office in Nanjing city.  The Jiangsu Department of Commerce has its UK Trade Representative based in Chelmsford Essex.

In 2014 the County Councils of Suffolk and Norfolk joined Essex in forming the East of England-Jiangsu Partnership with Jiangsu, which is also managed by Essex International.

This long partnership has created a huge range of individual projects in the fields of business, inward investment, all tiers of education, sport, and culture.

"The Jiangsu-UK office located in Essex has been an essential and valuable asset for Jiangsu, ideally located to assist Chinese companies arriving in Essex and UK companies looking to extend into China. The link with Essex is of paramount importance to Jiangsu and we are excited to continue our relationship for another 25 years.”
