China’s healthcare reform and sharing UK knowledge

Jiangsu Health CommissionEssex International has been working with the Jiangsu Health Commission whilst on a business visit to China to explore opportunities of collaboration in healthcare between Essex and Chinese organisations and businesses. There are particular opportunities in China for UK businesses wishing to sell their products and expertise in the areas of medical IT, training and community healthcare with the Jiangsu Health Commission responsible for improving healthcare delivery for 80 million people.

As part of their visit Essex International arranged a medical IT conference with the Jiangsu Health Commission. This followed a visit by the Chinese to Essex in June to promote UK-Jiangsu medical IT. Following these exchanges Essex County Council's Cllr Madden and Deputy Director-General of the Health Commission agreed that…

  • There will be a new training programme for 20 Jiangsu GPs to come to Essex in 2017 for 3 weeks to learn about the UK’s primary healthcare system
  • Three doctors from Jiangsu will come to Essex to shadow doctors in Essex hospitals
  • The two sides will explore new training exchanges in the field of early intervention in child protection and residential-based care for the elderly

Showcasing UK products and expertise

China is currently undergoing a reform of its healthcare service and Jiangsu Province has been signposted by the Chinese national government as a pilot province for this healthcare reform. This reform presents opportunities for UK companies to help in the modernisation and digitalisation of China’s healthcare in the areas of...

  • Hospital management systems
  • Building a SMART healthcare system using big data
  • Establishing electronic health records
  • Developing IT technology and telemedicine

The medical IT conference was a platform for UK companies including medical IT company, Docobo, and community hospital care company, Patients 2 People, to showcase their products and share their expertise. The conference enabled the UK companies to understand the healthcare requirements in Jiangsu as it looks to strengthen their community level healthcare provision.

“Even though we have some work in China already , it is extremely difficult as an SME to be able to access senior decision makers across China. The Essex International team have enabled us to access to senior health IT leaders in the Jiangsu province and are supporting us to develop those contacts and win business.”

Sharing knowledge with Chinese healthcare professionals

Residential care home JiangsuWith its fast economic and social development and increase in standards of living China is becoming an ageing society at an unprecedented rate. This is putting pressure on healthcare services in China. Building on its unique links with Jiangsu, going back almost 30 years, Essex International has developed a close link with the Jiangsu Health Commission. The Jiangsu Health Commission is the governmental authority in Jiangsu Province looking after the health of a population of 80million; 16 million of which are over 60.

During their visit to China Essex International visited a residential elderly care home. This follows recent visits to Essex by Chinese healthcare professionals, organised by Essex International, to identify areas of co-operation within the elderly healthcare sector. To deal with the ageing population the Jiangsu Health Commission plans to build 100 new day care centres each year.

New training exchanges in the field of child protection were also discussed by Essex International and the Jiangsu Health Commission. Whilst in China Essex International were shown an orphanage for disabled children in Nanjing where children receive one to one care by more than 100 long term volunteers.
