Essex International has been hosting a delegation of 18 Chinese GPs in a unique three week knowledge-exchange partnership. The aim of the partnership was for the GPs to look to the UK’s primary healthcare system for examples on how to relieve the pressure on the hospitals in China.
Essex International put together a bespoke training course which was jointly delivered with the ICENI Centre in Colchester. The training included lectures and site visits and covered the following topics…
- Overview of the NHS and local health care system in England
- Primary health care, the role of GPs and training of GPs
- How a General Practice is staffed, run, financed and regulated
“Through helping this group of Chinese doctors understand how the UK’s primary health care system operates, Essex International is in turn opening doors to business opportunities in China for Essex healthcare businesses. This long term programme is a win-win for both sides and we are keen to help other healthcare businesses who may be interested in the China market.”
Peter Manning, Head of Essex International, Essex International
Outcome from a business visit to China
This knowledge exchange partnership follows visits by Essex International to China when discussions, set up by Essex International, between Essex County Council and Deputy Director-General of the Health Commission saw a new training programme agreed for GPs. The business visit to China was to explore opportunities of collaboration in healthcare between Essex and Chinese organisations and businesses.
The training course put together by Essex International for the Jiangsu Health Commission is the start of a long term training collaboration incorporating digi health, hospital management systems, SMART healthcare system using big data, electronic health records and developing IT technology and telemedicine. Future plans are to deliver the course in China.
China’s healthcare reform
China is currently undergoing a reform of its healthcare service and Jiangsu Province has been signposted by the Chinese national government as a pilot province for this healthcare reform.
Building on its unique links with Jiangsu, going back almost 30 years, Essex International has developed a close link with the Jiangsu Health Commission. The Jiangsu Health Commission is the governmental authority in Jiangsu Province looking after the health of a population of 80million.
“Thanks to the county of Essex for the wonderful arrangement of the Chinese GP Educational Programme for the Jiangsu GP Delegation. We have learnt plenty of valuable experience from the UK NHS healthcare system, which will surely help us to improve the basic medical services in China. We sincerely look forward to further communication between both sides in the future.”
Daijia Fu, Director, Nanhu Community Health Service Centre of Nanjing

About the ICENI Centre
The ICENI Centre is a joint venture between Colchester Hospital University Foundation Trust and Anglia Ruskin University housed in a purpose built Research and Education Centre in Colchester. The influence of the ICENI Centre is seen across the Eastern region and the centre now acts as a focus for surgical research and training in conjunction with partner hospitals within the Anglia Ruskin postgraduate medical community.
"We are delighted to welcome this group of Chinese GPs from Jiangsu province in China. We have previously trained surgeons from Changzhou in Jiangsu and continuing our longer term connections with China is part of our international educational strategy. In this three week visit they will learn about the many differences between the UK and Chinese health systems and take home some new ideas that they can develop into their own practices."
