In November 2015 Essex International led a business trip to Jiangsu province in China, their partner location, to reflect on a year of mutual activity and to look for business opportunities for organisations in the East of England.
The UK is set to benefit from the heightened awareness of doing business with China since President Xi’s recent visit to the UK. Coming ten years after the last official visit to the UK by a Chinese leader, the clear statement of intent is that conditions are right to go to China and that China is more attuned to the UK than before the visit of President Xi.
Purpose of the trip
The business trip was organised to promote the East of England’s professional skills and training organisations which are in demand as China continues to develop and reform its public services in particular.
Norfolk County Council have been pleased to work with Essex International in furthering our links with Jiangsu Province and working strategically with Essex and Suffolk to promote the East of England offer. We look forward to welcoming Jiangsu based businesses to the county and fostering knowledge transfer to the betterment of all parties.

Activity highlights include . . .
1. Essex Jiangsu Joint Committee
The Essex Jiangsu Joint Committee, set up to maximise co-operation and opportunity between the East of England and China, met to reflect on the past year’s activities and successes and to agree an action plan focusing on opportunities for regional businesses in the areas of healthcare and education.
2. Jiangsu/UK centre
Essex International attended the project launch of the Jiangsu/UK centre in Suzhou City, one of China’s most prevalent cities. This project is a joint collaboration between a prominent Chinese company, Suzhou City and Essex International, created to enable Chinese businesses’ to access the UK and UK businesses access China. Plans are underway to develop a similar centre in Essex.
3. Professional training
Given China’s growth and reform trajectory they are keen to benefit from the expertise and experience that UK organizations can bring to their own government departments. One of the main purposes of the business visit was to sell professional UK expertise into China as part of the process of helping transfer skills to China and our partnership with Jiangsu. Essex International has already helped a number of UK organisations to sell professional training in the following disciplines...
- Legal training
- Fire fighting skills
- Primary health care system
- Food and cosmetics safety
Ten Jiangsu government departments and organisations have committed to, or expressed serious interest in, purchasing short training programmes from Essex International. These have a potential sale value of circa £400,000.
