Passenger and cargo volumes up at London Stansted Airport

London Stansted Airport has seen passenger numbers rise to over 22 million, an increase of 15.8%, in the last 12 months. This is the first time this volume of passenger numbers has been reached in six years and comes just eight months since the airport passed the 20 million passengers a year milestone.

China Southern route between London Stansted Airport and ChinaCargo volumes at the airport also continued to increase by 7.3% over the same month last year. Annual figures show over 235,000 tonnes of cargo were shipped through London Stansted Airport in the last year up 9.5% on the previous 12 months.

This figure is set to increase again after the opening of a new air cargo route between the UK and China earlier in the year. London Stansted Airport is the only UK airport to offer a direct cargo link between the two countries.

Business advantage of London Stansted Airport

London Stansted Airport new security hallFor the fifth consecutive month London Stansted Airport served over two million passengers. This increase in passenger numbers is partly due to the recent return of long haul flights to the airport and an increase in business travellers. London Stansted Airport is advantageously positioned for business travellers. It is seen as a core transport hub with unparalleled access to the M11 corridor with a reach of 17 million people within 2 hours and 1.2 million within 30 minutes.

“London Stansted Airport gives airlines access to London, the huge science & technology cluster in Cambridge, East London, Herts, Essex and the whole of East Anglia.

There has been an increase in services that allow business executives to get out to a European destination and back in the same day, which is a tremendous advantage to busy companies. And potential passengers in this catchment don’t have to undergo the ordeal of a one and a half, or even four and a half hour drive to get to Heathrow to catch a plane when they have London Stansted Airport on their doorstep.”

Andrew Harrison, Managing Director, London Stansted Airport

London-Stansted-Cambridge economic corridor

The thriving catchment area is part of the growing and increasingly successful London-Stansted-Cambridge economic corridor. The area has strong infrastructure links to the rest of the UK and Europe and close proximity to London, Europe’s no.1 finance hub. London Stansted Airport has more scheduled connections to Europe than any other airport in the world.

“To reach this milestone having begun the year at just below 20 million passengers is a fantastic achievement and testament to the strength of our catchment area as well as the continuing popularity of the airport’s extensive route network that serves 170 destinations - and more scheduled European destinations than any other UK airport.”
