A delegation of Chinese healthcare professionals from Jiangsu Provincial Hospital recently visited Basildon University Hospital and Braintree Community Hospitals to look for examples of best practice from the UK’s elderly healthcare system. The Chinese healthcare system is currently undergoing a reform part of which includes increasing the provision of healthcare facilities and services for the elderly.
The delegation was given a tour of the hospitals to demonstrate how the NHS elderly healthcare system works with the wider professional healthcare community. The visit organised by Essex International, Essex County Council’s International Trade Team, was arranged to explore opportunities in research, training and rehabilitation. This was with a view to offering offer future exchange programmes for Chinese health practitioners wishing to learn NHS practices for elderly care.
“It was a pleasure to meet the delegation, show them around parts of the hospital and tell them more about the way hospitals and the NHS are run in the UK. They seemed particularly interested in our newly opened frailty unit, due to the growing demand from older patients on their hospital services.”
Celia Skinner, medical director, Basildon University Hospital
Chinese health practitioners looking to the NHS
With its fast economic and social development and increase in standards of living China is becoming an aging society at an unprecedented rate. This is increasingly putting pressure on healthcare services in China.
The Chinese government is therefore looking to the NHS for best practice in elderly healthcare. It aims to…
- Build and upgrade the provision of medical care facilities/services at care homes
- Introduce community based healthcare services for the elderly
- Establish specialised hospitals for the elderly such as rehabilitation hospitals
- Encourage contracted service between hospitals and care homes
"Provide delivers a number of community health and care services from Braintree Community Hospital and the Chinese Health Professionals were keen to know more about how these services operated. It was an extremely interesting and useful visit and our organisation is keen to build strong relationships with the Chinese healthcare sector. We look forward to further exchanges as China works to improve the health of its population."
John Niland, Chief Executive, Provide
How Essex International is helping Chinese professionals
Essex International (EI) is working with the Jiangsu Health Commission to showcase best practice in elderly healthcare as well as facilitate Essex organisations and businesses to explore opportunities of collaboration with Chinese organisations.
The visit by Jiangsu Provincial Hospital is a follow up to a recent visit from the Director of Public Health in January about EI’s (continuing) work building training courses for the Health Commission.
Jiangsu Provincial Hospital is the biggest comprehensive hospital in Jiangsu Province and one of the leading hospitals in China. Due to its strength and capacity the hospital is one of the key players in the healthcare reform in Jiangsu and has been chosen by the Health Commission as the key facilitator for UK-China healthcare exchanges. The reform presents an emerging market for healthcare and elderly care providers all around the world.
“It is wonderful to see doctors from leading Essex hospitals sharing their knowledge and experience with colleagues from one of China’s top medical institutions as the country undergoes significant reform to its healthcare system.”
Cllr Kevin Bentley, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Partnerships, Essex County Council
Unique relationship and access to China
In recent years, Essex International (EI) has developed a close link with Jiangsu Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission to explore exchange opportunities in health care. Jiangsu Health Commission is the governmental authority in Jiangsu Province looking after the health of a population of 80million.
Through its unique links with Jiangsu, Essex International and healthcare professionals in Essex are able to help guide China in its reform and put together exchanges and professional training to, for example, give a detailed understanding of the role of the GP within a complex system.
