Round table discussion for healthcare & IT companies looking to enter the Chinese market

Healthcare & IT devices round table

A recent round table discussion held by Essex International (EI) gave UK medical device, software and IT companies an opportunity to sell their products to Chinese organisations. Companies were able to pitch their products directly to Chinese hospitals and senior members of the Department of Health and Family Planning from Jiangsu Province, the area with which EI has unique links.

Essex International arranged for key health officials and hospital managers from Jiangsu, who are directly responsible for upgrading Jiangsu’s health IT system, to visit Essex. The event was an example of how EI can organise UK businesses to meet potential buyers and facilitate discussions leading to business deals.

Bringing opportunities from China to UK companies

The Jiangsu Health Commission are in charge of the information development of the healthcare system in Jiangsu Province, a province with a population of 80 million. Essex International (EI) is working with the Jiangsu Health Commission to facilitate Essex organisations and businesses exploring opportunities of collaboration with Chinese organisations.

The recent visit of delegates, led by the Jiangsu Health Commission, included visitors from Jiangsu Province Hospital, Suzhou Municipal Hospital and members of the Health and Family Planning departments. The latest visit is a follow up to a visit earlier in the year from the Director of Public Health.

Of particular interest to this month's delegation was:

  1. Healthcare & IT devices round tableTelemedicine systems - Remote Medical Consultation between doctors and patients, or between junior doctors and senior doctors
  2. Information sharing among different layers of health care providers
  3. Medical care supervision - IT platforms/products for data collection and analysis in order to monitor and supervise care quality
  4. IT products for elderly health care and rehabilitation

Presenting to potential Chinese buyers

The event included a round table discussion for companies who gave short presentations on their products and services followed by question and answer sessions.

“Even though we have some work in China already , it is extremely difficult as an SME to be able to access senior decision makers across China. The Essex International team have enabled us to access to senior health IT leaders in the Jiangsu province and are supporting us to develop those contacts and win business.”

Adrian Flowerday, Managing Director and Co-founder, Docobo

Speakers included representatives from companies specialising in electronic document management solutions, device manufacturing, patient record unified database solutions and integrated digital health solutions.

Companies were able to gauge the level of interest in their products as well as receive crucial feedback as to whether the product would need adaptation for the Chinese market.

“While there are lucrative business opportunities to be targeted in China it is always very difficult to assess these from afar and to find the appropriate level of people to engage with. I found the session that (Essex International) arranged to be an excellent forum in which to engage 1-on-1 with both government and hospital senior executives and will certainly be chasing up on the interest we generated amongst the Chinese delegation.”

Modernising China's healthcare

China is currently undergoing a reform of its healthcare service and Jiangsu Province has been signposted by the Chinese national government as a pilot province for this healthcare reform. There are great opportunities for UK companies, especially high-Tech companies and IT companies to provide advanced products and solutions to modernise and digitalise China’s health care.

As part of their visit the Chinese group was taken to organisations in Essex, including Gaitsmart a sensor based motion analysis company, where they were given demonstrations of how modern IT systems are being used in the UK.
